If so, why? What are the advantages and what are the drawbacks?

I’m a Kindle 2 owner. Let me tell you from my personal experience. I like my Kindle 2 very much because it helps me to utilize my time. Before I own the Kindle, waiting time like the time when I’m waiting for my friend or waiting for shuttle bus or whatever is simply wasted. Now I only need to bring the Kindle 2 along with me. Another thing I like the most is the text-to-speech function, which means I can “read” books without even holding or looking at the Kindle. So I can use it just like the ipod, for books rather than music.
My only complaint is that with the keypad, the device is a bit big in size so it cannot fit into all my purses. I’ve to bring some larger purses when I want to have the Kindle with me. It isn’t a big problem anyway
BTW, there is a good review here which talks about how to get the most from investment of the Kindle 2, guess you’ll find interested:http://www.speedreaderxreview.com/is-kin…
I think the advantages are easy to see – one small thin device instead of tons of books and magazines.
The drawbacks include:
- It’s not a book. If you like the feel of handling and reading a book, of having stacks and shelves of books around, you won’t get that.
- The books you buy still basically belong to Amazon because of the DRM (digital rights management encryption). If Amazon went out of business and you lost or damaged your Kindle you would have no way to get anything back.
- The device only lets you buy when you are in the USA. So if you bring it outside the USA, you can read the books you already have but can’t buy new ones.
- The new big Kindle lets you read PDFs but there is no way to easily get the PDFs into your Kindle – it does not have an SD slot or similar. You have to hook it up to your PC, or pay amazon to transfer your files to the Kindle over their system.
Well, I think definitely it’s worth it. I’ve got a Kindle 2 and I love it.
Advantages:
- it’s not that expensive anymore, you can get good discounts, e.g. here: http://www.mobileereaders.com/Amazon_Kin…
- you can take all your books with yourself
- you don’t have to carry heavy books anymore
- you can even listen to music, read blogs and newspapers
- you don’t have to go to a bookstore or spend precious time with ordering, waiting for delivery of books, etc.
- you don’t lose you bookmarks:) it’s all digital
- you can put a lot of types of formats on Kindle, pdf, jpeg, html, etc.
Disadvantages:
- Amazon will come out with a new Kindle every year (imo) and you either purchase the device again or learn to live with the fact that yours is older, has less features, etc. than the future ones (but this is the case with all types of electronics…)
I hope it helps!
If you’re an avid reader and know how to efficiently use a computer, it’s a nice thing to have. It’s especially useful if you like to bring books with you when you travel, to work to read, etc…
It can hold up to 3500 books and you can have daily newspapers sent electronically every day. That alone is a great advantage.
It has the 3G wireless, so if you’re in a wifi area you can surf the web.
The only drawback is it’s only accessible to people with an expendable income. If you can afford to dish out $400 for it and you’re going to actually use it…it’s a nice thing to have.
There’s a lot about the features and also a video on the amazon page for the Kindle DX (which is the new, slightly larger-screened version.) Check it out for yourself:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0015TC…
I’ll say the best place to check is the customer review section on Amazon. It is the most informative place, and they are opinions from actual users on Amazon with both the PROs and CONs. The reviews are sorted by helpfulness too, voted by Amazon visitors like us:http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?i…
I would not call it an investment. Its price is not going to appreciate.
Long term probably everyone will be using an electronic book, whether it is going to be a kindle, it is something to be seen.
President announces “new Glass-Steagall Act” to prevent banks that take customer deposits from taking risky investment bets, and promises a crackdown on financial mergers to prevent institutions becoming “too big to fail” President Barack Obama today declared his intent to take on Wall Street by announcing plans for stringent rules on the banking sector that prompted comparisons with the draconian regulations introduced after the Great Depression. In the boldest move taken by any government around the world to respond to the financial crisis, Obama told banks they would no longer be able to take risky bets with their own capital to make money on the financial markets. Banks which take deposits will not be allowed to use their own money to take bets on markets, run hedge funds or make private equity investments through what he called the “Volcker rule” after former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker. He also wants to prevent further consolidation of the financial system in the US…
Nothing has been posted about a 2.0 version. However, price drops usually signify that something is new on the horizon. They were out of stock of them for months, but if they are making more it is really hard to know what they are up to. I'm also debating between getting one now and waiting for goodness knows how long.
this could be a bad loan… the bank will add principle to the balance… yeah you pay 900.00 for a mortgage payment but instead of you owing 200,000 you now owe 200,500. And the next month you pay 900.00 and owe 201,000…etc. this goes on for 5 years. After 5 years you have paid no principle and now owe 230,000. Just to get the low payment! BUT, most houses will go up more than 500 dlls per month in equity so its depending on the region it might be a good or bad deal… You see.
Parents Magazine. They have some stuff about pregnancy, and some stuff about parenting. It's a great magazine. I still receive it every month although my son has been gone since January. I still enjoy reading it.
Are you sure there is no where to buy it at all? I'm pretty sure some places online have it. There isn't a huge difference, but I would still go with the Kindle (cause I love mine!)
I've never heard of it… But as far as I know, quite a lot of people complain about the price and availability of content for Sony Reader. You can read the review from actual customer on Amazon, a person called N. Jenkins is a fan of sony reader, but also go for Kindle for more available titles:
If you are in the United States, the Kindle will definitely be more convenient as you can simply download the ebooks everywhere with wireless access. Here is a good comparison of the two:
Hope it helps.
You can adjust the volume of the speaker, and it is quite loud. There is a demonstration of this read out aloud function in the video at the bottom of this page:
Hope it helps
Watch out amazon charger per mb for each conversion file of pdf , txt . It sucks ,is like you pay to amazon for each transfer of your digital camera . Sony is much better kindle because it has full support without charging it. Amazon is a usual partner with cnet , kindle will never lose in theirs review
wow really nice vid
He’s not a decoy… he’s a Jack Ass! People worship this guy! LOL! I bet I get more red-thumbs-down then you got! LOL! I think the Russian’s are his biggest backers while he slams the US.
It may not work. Not all of them do. If not you'd just have to find it in the text. If its an end of the text thing you could bookmark where the footnotes section begins at the end of the text so you can jump between your bookmark and the text itself.

I heard a little joke about investing in the stock market…. it went something like this…. if you invested $1000 in certain stocks such as enron your return was anywhere from $16 – $100… but if you invest in beer, and drink that beer, and return the cans…. at the end, you will have a $215 profit for the same $1000….. it was called the 401-keg plan! good luck!
server speed sure comes at a pretty price in SA. If you can afford it, then it's worthwhile. if not, then you're stuck
Amazing tool, i bought one and played Need for Speed Underground on it. For gaming the hole day at the university it is very very fine.
This is able to be fixed by buying bigger servers. What package did you buy for your website? I may be able to help.
